Financial Aid

INDEPENDENT STUDENT APPEAL

In order for you to be considered an independent tudent for Federal financial aid for the 2004-2005 year, at least one of the following conditions must be met:

  • You were born before January 1, 1983.
  • You are a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces.
  • You will be enrolled in a graduate or professional program (beyond a bachelor's degree) in 2006-2007.
  • You are married.
  • You are an orphan or were a ward of the court/dependent of the court until age 18.
  • You have dependents (other than your children or spouse) who live with you and who receive more than half of their support from you.

If you do not meet one of the above conditions, you are considered a dependent student for federal financial aid for the 2006-2007 year, and it will be necessary for you to provide parental information when applying for financial aid for this academic year. However, if you have some exceptional circumstances or reasons why you should be considered an independent student, even though you do not meet the federal definition, you must provide us with documentation supporting your situation.

Please note: If you were considered an independent student for the previous academic year, we cannot ensure that you will be considered an independent student for the subsequent academic year.

You must complete the Independent Status Request Form, attach all required pieces of documentation, and return to the Office of Student Financial Support and Services at Edinboro University. Upon receipt of this completed form and documentation, we will review your status to deterine whether or not you are an independent student for the upcoming academic year, and you will be notificed in writing of our decision.
