The Program: The Department of Elementary Education offers a graduate program enabling students to obtain a Master of Education Degree with a focus in Early Childhood Education. The program qualifies students certified in elementary education for certification in Early Childhood Education. | ||
| The Cohort Program: The following course cycle includes two courses per semester and two summer courses delivered online. One "summer residency" will be required in which students begin coursework online and then come to Edinboro University for one week following the semester in which the student is enrolled in ELED 580 Assessment and Evaluation in Early Childhood Education. During this time, students will be participating in a supervised clinical experience. | ||

ELED776 | Theory and Practice in Early Childhood Education |
| A search for effectual techniques for promoting the maximum of learning in classroom situations, this course is founded in the theories of learning educators. Application of theoretic principles to real and hypothetical problem areas will constitute a significant portion of the study. To aid the experienced teacher in exploring new avenues to learning and finding solutions to current problems are purposes of this course. | |
ELED 783 | Issues and Trends in Early Literacy Development |
| This course provides an in-depth study of current issues and trends relating to literacy acquisition in young children. It examines the psychological and sociological factors underlying the development of language and literacy, the identification of best practices, and the evaluation and assessment of literacy environments. Those who have taken ELED520 may not take ELED783 for credit. | |
ELED 784 | Curriculum in Early Childhood Education |
| This course investigates the nature and scope of curriculum development for children, from birth through third grade, and analyzes various curriculum concepts, principles and organizational patterns. It also addresses historical foundations, philosophies, learning theories, and contemporary influences on early childhood curriculum. | |
EDUC 784 | Psychological Foundations of Education |
| This course provides for advanced study of the psychological aspects of contemporary theories of human learning and development. It examines constructivist approaches to instruction. Students apply knowledge of learning theories to classroom decisions concerning student diversity, student motivation, and instructional strategies. | |
ELED 560 | Math and Science in Early Childhood |
| Designed to provide an understanding of the processes and content of science and mathematics and their applications relevant to the education of young children (N-3), this course includes involvement in interactive processes focusing on developmentally-appropriate topics and curriculum integration. Thematic units, aligned with the PA Department of Education's Early Childhood Curriculum Indicators, PA Academic Standards, and the Head Start Child Outcomes Framework are modeled and supported by children's literature. | |
EDUC 788 | Research in Education |
| This course develops the point of view and skills which enable students to apply research procedures to professional problems. Students gain the expertise necessary to be critical consumers of research and carry out completed research projects. | |
ELED 661 | Family, School and Community: Partnerships in Early Childhood Education |
| This course involves an in-depth investigation of the importance of the families' involvement in children's education, the necessity of collaboration between home and school, and the role of the school in promoting parental involvement in their children's education. It addresses topics such as family structures, effective home-school-community relationships, school-based programs, home-based programs and parent education programs. | |
ELED 580 | Assessment and Evaluation in Early Childhood Education |
| This course identifies appropriate assessment strategies used to evaluate cognitive, physical, and psychosocial development of young children and considers implications for curriculum planning. It explores issues in assessment. | |
ELED 617 | Improvement of Instruction in Language Arts |
| This course is designed to give students an opportunity to examine past and present techniques and materials used in teaching language arts. Special attention is given to the interrelationships among oral and written language, listening and to the place of literature in the teaching of language arts. | |
ELED 778 | Developmental Play for Young Children |
| This course examines the kinds of play and the role each has in promoting development of the young child. Integration of play into the curriculum of preschool through early primary education is researched. Topics of motor ability, cognitive learning, creative and social-emotional factors influencing the child's play are addressed. | |
| ELED 678 | Kindergarten Education |
| This course explores the nature of kindergartners' learning and development. It investigates specific aspects of the child's social, emotional, cognitive, and physical needs and develops a rationale for kindergarten. It explores curriculum planning and implications of laws and issues. | |
