The Program: The Department of Elementary Education offers the graduate program enabling students to obtain a Master of Education Degree in Reading and qualifying students for certification as a Reading Specialist. This professional training is essential in diagnosing and helping children with reading problems. | ||
| The Cohort Program: The following course cycle includes two courses per semester delivered Online and one summer residency which requires students to begin coursework online and then come to Edinboro University. During this time, students will be participating in a supervised clinical experience. | ||

| READ 706 | Foundations of Literacy: Theory and Instruction |
| This course will deal with the foundations of literacy in the elementary and middle school. It will offer a careful study of theory and best practice as applied to literacy learning for diverse learners. Emphasis will be given to the scope and sequence of literacy instruction, instructional methods and materials, assessment, and strategies used in teaching reading and writing to elementary and middle school children. An observational field component is included in the course. | |
| READ 607 | Reading and Writing in the Content Areas |
| This course explores methods and materials for effective secondary reading instruction and is designed for the full-time reading teachers or the regular academic teacher who provides reading instruction. The course is designed to permit discussion and independent study in areas of major concern for middle and secondary teachers in better reading. | |
| ELED 786 | Elementary and Middle School Curriculum Development and Improvement |
| This course investigates the nature and scope of curriculum improvement and development in both the elementary and middle schools. Various curriculum concepts, principles and organizational patterns are analyzed in depth. | |
| READ 709 | Literacy Difficulties: Assessment and Intervention |
| This course will emphasize techniques for diagnosing and providing instructional intervention for students with literacy difficulties. Emphasis will be placed on appropriate diagnostic techniques, plans for the organization of an effective literacy program, and the development of practical intervention strategies. The student will complete a field component by preparing a detailed case study. | |
| READ 710 | Seminar: Organization, Supervision and Administration of Reading Programs |
| This course emphasized organization and supervision of reading programs from kindergarten through high school. Specific focus is given to the role of the reading specialist in program development and implementation, organizational patterns in reading programs, and designing and operating professional development programs. | |
| READ 712 | Reading Clinic |
| The clinic practicum requires the graduate student to diagnose reading problems and prepare and carry out a remedial program of instruction. | |
| EDUC 788 | Research in Education |
| This course develops the point of view and skills which enable students to apply research procedures to professional problems. Students gain the expertise necessary to be critical consumers of research and carry out completed research projects. | |
| ELED 526 | Technology Integration in the Classroom |
| This course examines the development of the computer and its inclusion in our educational system. Students learn to use contemporary computer hardware, peripherals and software. Classroom applications of microcomputer and educational courseware are emphasized. | |
| READ 702 | Reading and the Special Needs Student |
| Through this course, the candidate will gain an understanding of exceptional students and the reading problems that may be associated with their special needs. Specific problems that affect reading for students with exceptionalities will be studied with suggested methods of dealing with these problems. | |

| This course is designed to give students an opportunity to examine past and present techniques and materials used in teaching language arts. Special attention is given to the interrelationships among oral and written language, listening and to the place of literature in the teaching of language arts. | |
