“The Independent Study Program aims to serve students whose scholarly bent seems most clearly adapted to independent work. Such persons are permitted to attack problems and earn elective credit for work performed outside the classroom requirements of any specific course in the curriculum. Students enrolled in the Honors Program are automatically eligible for independent study participation.

Students are selected for independent study on the basis of recommendations from their faculty advisors and from instructors most acquainted with their capabilities. Students may not elect independent study before the third semester of their work so as to ensure ample time for their demonstration of capability and time for observation by the faculty. Independent study may be carried on within (and earn 2, 3, 4, or 5 credits toward) either the general education electives or the student's chosen area of concentration, or both."  (2006-2008 Edinboro University of Pennsylvania Catalog, pp. 39)

Independent studies provide opportunities for students to complete interdisciplinary study on a topic of their choosing, at the direction of the chosen professor.

The process first involves identifying a topic in which you are interested and consulting with a supervising professor about the possibility.  When discussing the idea, have an idea in mind for the type of scholarship project, or research, appropriate for the independent study and provide her/him with a copy of the Independent Study Guidelines for their review.

Independent studies require a committee of three faculty members.  The supervising professor will act as the chair, while the other two members will act as resources for your work and will participate in the presentation of your work at the end of the semester.

Two independent studies are required to complete the Honors Senior Project and should be used as the vehicles by which the project is completed.  Visit the Honors Senior Project page for more information.

Upon agreement by the professor, and using the Honors Program guidelines, construct a proposal (with the professor's input), complete the EUP Authorization to Enroll in Independent Study Form and Independent Proposal Form and turn them in by the published deadline.  Twice during the semester Independent Study Progress Forms and reports are due.  At the end of the semester, an Independent Study Completion Form and Independent Study Presentation Form are both due.  The culminating event is a presentation of the work completed, given by the student, to their committee and an Honors Program audience.

If the proposal, or the project / research are not honors level in their scope, or requirements, the Director of the program will offer suggestions for acceptable improvement.  Students will have an opportunity to revise and resubmit the proposal for approval.  In the event that initial approval of the proposal is denied, students will have one week (seven days) from the date of notification by the director, to turn in the revised work.  Only one opportunity for revision will be afforded per independent study proposal.
