Northampton Summer Institute
Saturday, 5 July until Friday, 8 August 2008Studying at the Summer Institute at the University of Northampton will offer the chance to extend your college experience to some of the most beautiful areas of England.
The town of Northampton is a mixture of old and new. Much of the surrounding countryside is very rural and typically English. It is centrally located and several nearby Northamptonshire villages vie for the title "Centre of England". Consequently, during your stay at Northampton you will be within easy travelling distance of many cultural and historic centres - Cambridge, Oxford, Stratford-upon-Avon, Warwick Castle, Althorp, Hampton Court, Stamford and Burghley House, Blenheim Palace, Woburn Abbey, Windsor Castle. London with its many cosmopolitan attractions is less than an hour away. You will have the opportunity to visit many of these places during your stay.
The academic program of the Institute offers courses in the humanities and social sciences. All are taught by experienced faculty from either The University of Northampton or our partner universities in the USA and Canada. Courses include: British Literature Survey; Creative Writing; Crime and Punishment; Representing Britain: Media & Culture in the UK; Cross-cultural Management; History of Renaissance Art; Acting: British Society on Stage; Globalisation, Human Rights and Terrorism; Serial Murder: Issues and Problems; and Philosophy of Love and Sex.
In addition to the wide variety of academic courses offered, one of the central characteristics of the Institute is the extensive and innovative cultural program. Excursions beyond the campus will take your to other important and memorable regions of Britain. You will have the opportunity to explore the delightful countryside of Northamptonshire and to visit cities such as Oxford and Bath and Shakespeare's home town of Stratford-upon-Avon. The whole third week of the Summer Institute will be devoted to a field trip to places relevant to the subjects you will be studying. Depending on your choice of subjects, you will visit either London or Florence.
During your stay you will also be able to take part in a varied social program. Activities will include welcome and farewell parties, film nights, quiz nights, a 'pub crawl' and the opportunity to try your skills at other typically English social and sporting activities. You will be living in an international environment, and we hope that you will make the most of your stay in England. There is much to explore and experience - towns and cities, local people and their customs, famous country houses and heritage sites.
