In order to be recommended to the Pennsylvania Department of Education for teacher certification by Edinboro University, the student must:

  • Have an earned bachelor's degree or equivalent in an approved program of teacher education
  • Possess a minimum cumulative 3.00 QPA
  • Earn a grade of C or better in student teaching
  • Have passed all Praxis tests required for certification by the Pennsylvania Department of Education

An exception to the above procedure must be authorized in writing by the Dean of Education.

Application for teacher certification must be made and the certificate issued before graduates may teach in the public schools of Pennsylvania.  The application must be accompanied by a $15 fee.

Statutory Requirements

In accordance with the Public School Code of 1949 Sections 110, 1202 and 1209, every professional employee certified to serve in the schools of the Commonwealth shall:

  • Be a good moral character
  • Show a physician's certificate that applicant is neither mentally nor physically disqualified from successful performance of the duties of a teacher
  • Be at least 18 years of age

An applicant for a certificate shall have completed in addition to all legal requirements a program of teacher education approved by the Secretary of Education, and shall have the recommendations of the preparing institution.

Pennsylvania Teacher Certification Tests

Praxis I
In order to be admitted to candidacy as a Secondary Education teacher, all prospective graduates must pass the Praxis I Examinations.  The tests sample prospective graduates' knowledge in reading, writing and mathematics.  Students are encouraged to register for these tests early in their studies.

Praxis II
Prior to student teaching, candidates must achieve a passing score on the Praxis II Examination appropriate to their field of certification.  Information concerning this program is available from the Office of the Dean of the School of Education.
