Student teaching represents the culmination of the program of professional preparation.  It is an important requirement for the degree, Bachelor of Science in Education.  Undergraduate candidates must complete 12 semester hours of student teaching under the supervision of a professor in the Secondary Education Department.

Student teaching is a full-time activity in which students are given experience in most of the activities a classroom teacher might encounter.  The student is expected to devote full time and energies to the student teaching assignment.  Careful planning is necessary on the part of students during the first three years of their college careers in order that their assignments can be completed on schedule.  Student teaching is to be scheduled during the student's senior year or, in the case of graduate students seeking teacher certification, after completion of all certification coursework.

Requirements

In order to enroll as a student teacher, a Secondary Education student must have:

  • Completed at least 96 semester hours of undergraduate credit
  • Maintained an undergraduate cumulative quality grade point average of at least 2.80
  • Passed all Praxis II tests required in the student's intended area(s) of certification
  • Completed, with a grade of C or better, all Professional Block courses
  • Completed, with a grade of C or better, SEDU575 Secondary Field Experience, and have a recommendation from the field supervisor to advance to student teaching

Application

To enroll in Student Teaching, the student must attend a student teaching orientation meeting the semester prior to student teaching.  The student must then:

  1. Complete the Advancement to the Student Teaching Level Form
  2. Obtain the approval signatures of the advisor and appropriate department chair
  3. File the form with the Dean of Education
  4. Present a copy of the form to the Director of Student Teaching upon requesting a Student Teaching placement

The University reserves the right to assign any student teacher to schools in the service area according to the best interest of the student, the university, and the program.  Students are required to provide their own transportation to assigned schools.

The student may choose to be graded on a Satisfactory-Unsatisfactory basis or with a letter grade.  No student may take additional academic work while completing his/her student teaching assignment unless approved by the Director of Student Teaching and Student Assistance.
