Speech and Hearing Sciences Program
The primary mission of the baccalaureate Speech and Hearing Sciences (SHS) program is to provide foundational theoretical and observational exposure to normal human communication and swallowing processes, including biological, physical, and psycholinguistic bases, as well as an overview of the clinical process. Courses in normal human communication development and clinical observation are required prerequisites for graduate study in speech-language pathology and audiology.
The major goals of the Speech and Hearing Sciences Program are:
1) to provide students with a pre-professional liberal arts degree in speech and hearing sciences;
2) to provide the pre-professional academic preparation credential for graduate level education in speech-language pathology or audiology;
3) to provide students with a curriculum that emphasizes foundational theoretical exposure to normal human communication processes;
4) to provide students with a pre-service training model that emphasizes observation of the clinical service delivery process for persons with communication cognitive, and/or swallowing disorders; and
5) to prepare student for continued graduate study in the disciplines of speech-language pathology, speech and hearing sciences, and/or audiology.
