Windows Update

Keeping Windows up to date is one of the best ways to help keep your computer running well.  To make sure Automatic Updating is enabled to Start à  Settings  à Control Panel.  Double-click on the System icon and in the “System Properties” window, find the tab labeled “Automatic Updates” and click once on the tab.  Check the box next to “Keep my computer up to date”.  Set the radio button next to the description that says “Automatically download the updates, and install them on the schedule that I specify.”  Select “Everyday”.  The time you select can be whatever is most convenient.  Press the OK button.

                  

 

Windows Firewall

A personal firewall is a piece of software which can be found on your Windows XP. It creates a protective barrier between your computer and potentially harmful content on the Internet. It helps you to guard your computer against hackers and many computer viruses and worms. Although it will block useful tasks such as sharing files through a network or transferring files in applications, it is recommended for you to enable it in order to protect your computer.

Turn on Windows firewall
If you are using Windows XP SP2, you can turn on Windows Firewall with the following steps:

1.    Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

2.    Click Security Center.

3.    Select Windows Firewall.

4.    Select On (Recommended) if it is not selected.

5.    Click OK to close the Windows Firewall window.

6.    Close Windows Security Center.
