As of August 18th, 2006, the migration of your personal webpages* from Piper (a.k.a. Cluster) to users.edinboro.edu has been completed. Please read below to learn how this migration affects your access and editing of these pages.
How do I edit my pages now?
In the past, you created pages on your local PC then used an FTP program such as WS_FTP to transfer them cluster.edinboro.edu and into your account, into the [.www] subdirectory.
Now, you can still use FTP-- and now, almost any FTP-capable program should work (Including Internet Explorer). Instead of the old host name (cluster.edinboro.edu), you should now use webstorage.edinboro.edu. Previously, you used your username and e-mail password to log in. Now, prefix your username with your domain (i.e. eup\username), and use your Network password.
Finally, since this space is dedicated to webpages, there is no need for a 'www' directory. You can start your website structure right at the root directory.
FTP is no longer your only option. While using the campus network (this does not include public ports or Residence Hall rooms), you can edit the pages directly via a shared folder. Simply click Start, Run, then enter the UNC path \\storage1\dfs\webstorage\username. This will take you directly to your files. If you are making major changes, you might wish to save a local copy first just in case you make a mistake.
What if you do make a mistake? You may know that under VMS on the old system, multiple versions of files were maintained. Something similar happens on your S:\ drive and your web storage-- they are called "Shadow copies" or "Previous Versions". At 7am and noon every day, any changes made to your directory (since the last shadow was created) are stored. By right-clicking in your directory and choosing properties, you can restore files-- even onces you have since deleted-- by using the "Previous Versions" tab. If you don't see that tab, the computer you are on may not have the client software installed. However, all campus lab computers should have this software enabled. The shadows are created regardless of whether you are using a PC with the client software.
Do I have more space?
Do my webpages still affect my e-mail?
In the past, students had a tiny 8MB quota (and employees had only ~50MB) in which both your e-mail and webpages had to fit, as well as a 100MB quota for your "S:\" or "network drive". Everyone's e-mail quota is now at least 100MB, and is completely separate from your webpages. Your webpages now share quota with your "S:\" drive. So, if you have 100MB available on your S: drive, you could use 40MB for file storage and 60MB for web storage-- or any combination you choose. (Note: although they share a quota, the contents of your S:\ drive are not visible via the web.)
Has my web address changed?
What about people that have my old address??
Yes, your web address has changed. In the past it was http://www.edinboro.edu/~username. Unfortunately, it was not reasonable to maintain that structure when we migrated the space. Your new web address is http://users.edinboro.edu/username. We do realize that people you don't even know about may have your web address, and you have no way to tell them about the change. And many faculty have already prepared their documentation for the Fall 2006 semester using the old web address. No Problem! We have implemented an "intelligent" page-not-found process that will notify a person trying to reach the old web address that the files have moved, and automatically take them there.
What happend to my old files??
What is this "PreviousFiles.zip" file??
In April, 2006, the users.edinboro.edu space was first created. And as a 'proof-of-concept', we copied everyone's webpages from Piper to this new location, so we could find out what problems we might run into. Although never announced, it seems that some people discovered this site and started using it! So, as a protection against losing files that might be current for those few people, we compressed the old copy of the VMS webpages (and any new files that might have been added), and then re-processed the migration. So if you added files to this location yourself, you should find them in the "PreviousFiles.zip" file.
*Please Note: We migrated ONLY your www subdirectory from your VMS account. If you have other files in other directories that you wish to keep, we recommend you retrieve them as soon as possible. We do not know how much longer we can keep the server (Piper) 'alive'. If you have trouble using FTP to connect to piper.edinboro.edu using your username and e-mail password, please contact the Help Desk for assistance.
